Total Fest 2011 was amazing Big Business, The Arrivals, Shannon and the Clams, Street Eaters, Kowloon Walled City, The Trashies, Dead and the I could go on and on and on.

One of my favs though was watching an Eagle catch a fish 15 feet away from us while floating the Blackfoot with Dead and the Street Eaters. It was even more amazing when an osprey attacked the eagle and tried to take the fish right above our heads. Johnny and Megan got pictures but lost their camera in a rapid. Damm!

"Good drum sound. No lyrics or track listing. Bummer. Good album art. Quiet vocal guy is nice. Reminds me of John K. Samson. Pretty good mix once i set sound levels. Track 4 have- ' I crush all the pretty things underneath my feet'. I'd like to hear the two voices together more '...so far from home...' good dual vox. Nice harmonica. Good music to drive to. 'silence out here is roaring' track sounds recorded on an answering machine, works well. Next song gruff box dude really lets go. I like that. He's subdued til then. MRR reviews MBR catalog

I was pretty stoked when I picked up issue 341 of MRR and read the review section. MBR 002 through 005 were reviewed in this issue. Various reviewers gave their takes on the records and here is what they thought:

Goddammitboyhowdy "Is Rez Punk"-7 inch EP MBR002 (review by Fred Schrunk)

Super good and simple driving pop punk. You get heavy early-DESCENDENTS vibe, combined with a Florida meets Minneapolis pop structure. Songs about desperation and darkness. And as they are from Montana, you get that "music from the middle of nowhere" touch. You know, they're not trying to be cool or placate to whatever trend is hot at the moment. It's just some kids playing their hearts out, trying to create punk as they see it. And it destroys. (FS)

Ambassador Gun "Rich"-7 inch EP MBR003 (review by Brad Lambert)

This Minneapolis three-piece sounds like dudes who have been in punk bands who are now doing death metal. This is tinged with a bit of that proggy melodic guitar lead stuff that is usually done really badly in metalcore bands, but is also done awesomely in a few crust bands. In this case it sounds fairly ripping and I am a fan. The element that I probably liked the most is the growlingly screamed vocals, which are raw and gritty but you can still catch the words if you have an ear for pissed off dudes. Both jams on the disc are for the headbangers. (BL)

Squalora "Hell Is Other People" LP/CD MBR-004 (review by Kevin Manion)

Here we have a '90s style progressive crust assault from Portland. This platter opens with George Carlin (to whom the LP is dedicated) sample on top of an acoustic riff, and immediately I had some idea of what I was in for. The songs are either both long and drawn-out numbers featuring several tempo changes or done-in-an-instant ragers. While they are speedy at times, I get the feeling SQUALORA aren't really concerned with thrashing your face into oblivion. Most of their riffs range from atmospheric and melodic to straight up sludgy. Lyrically they are definitely political, and present interesting ideas without coming across as too heavy-handed. For instance, there's a pretty badass song about the subversive potential of graffiti. NEUROSIS is the obvious musical reference point here, but ECONOCHRIST also come to mind at times. Like the aforementioned Bay Area quartet, SQUALORA's members moved from a podunk town(Missoula,MT) to a punk haven, and their roots show. Perhaps I'm generalizing, but bands comprised of people from isolated areas seem to have a more "all over the place" vibe than those closely associated with thriving punk environments. There are a lot of different ideas at work on this LP, and while not all of them hit the mark, there are certainly some memorable passages. If they ditched the blast beats and faster tunes (which sound like they were written in haste compared to the longer songs) and just focused on being a progressive melodic outfit I think they'd be better off, because the band is definitely tight. The Trashies "Space Jam" LP/CD MBR-005 (review by Mitch Cardwell)

I had previously pegged the TRASHIES as a SPITS rip-off band, as that's how their initial recordings came across. That opinion no longer holds any water. These guys learned plenty of new tricks on their hiatus and have returned wiser, weirder and far more enjoyable than I had expected. It's closer to UZI RASH than ever before (shocking, since both bands share the same brain trust), much more musical and manic than I ever expected. It's still totally absurd and generally uncomfortable, but you can dance to it.

With attempting to get this endeavor off the ground it can be hard to get noticed. Reviewers and sites get overwhelmed with material being sent in and it seems that much can get overlooked as we are noticing. You can read a disclaimer on many sites stating this exact point. Another Missoula related act courtesy of Minor Bird Records; ol’ Marty Hill has a good ear for a wide array of rugged, sandpaper sounds. This time it’s punk/rock trio, Goddamitboyhowdy. Aside from one of the most blatantly awful band names I’ve encountered in recent history, Is Rez Punk is a top-notch collection of ratty, snotty, off-key punk with aggressive tendencies and some mean rock n' roll chops. I’d call this Red Kross meets Swedish anthem hoisters Regulations with a pinch of Black Flag and Avail rounding things out.

Beginning with haunting acoustic guitars and a cryptic sample that accurately describes American politics as, “red, white, and blue American bullshit,” it’s obvious the Missoula to Portland, transplanted crusties Squalora have an ambitious experience intended for their audience on Hell Is Other People, their second LP under the Squalora banner. They put out the Character Assassins LP and a handful of 7 inches as Ass-End Offend. Space Jam is the latest offering from the godfathers of Northwest trashcore (NWTC, suckers!) The Trashies. After a multiple year hiatus these dirty dogs return with an impressive album that reeks of spilled PBR, weed smoke and dirty laundry. I have to admit that back in the early days of the band I wasn't entirely sold, but it didn't take more than an impressively sweaty and destructive show or two for me to stop worrying, and love The Trashies.

The 11 tracks clock in at well under 30 minutes and while there's a clunker or two scattered throughout, the end result is nothing less than solid. "Paved Reality" is a Pere Ubu-esque earworm that smacks of apocalyptic anxiety. The Bo Diddley beat behind "Destroy" makes me want to do exactly that—but in a calm, calculated manner. It's a weird feeling. While many a band has failed at attempts to dub out, the tense echoes of "Bugsmoker" work here. The stop-and-go trashcore anthem "White Mold" is bound to inspire a few fists in the air when these dudes get trashed at Total Fest X. Don't miss it.

Lp Review
"Most of you fellow MRR readers will not like this album. But for those of you out there who won't stop reading this review upon first mention of "folk punk" we have something here for you. This is way more folk than punk; in fact it's not all that punk at all. But it's gritty, it's raw and it's really well orchestrated. The songwriting is good and the lyrics are thoughtful and poetic. In a musical genre dominated by really annoying kids and bands this feels fresh. Make no bones about it, this is folk music, but if you're on the lookout for the cutting edge of folk music, check out these Montana kids. (Fred Schrunk)

CD Review
"Frustratingly, (well, for me at any rate), the packaging accompanying this effort is pretty minimal. Like no address for the band. No song titles (though I did discover that there are fourteen ditties, which are even named on the disc itself). Instrumentation is also fairly spare, and semi-acoustic. Guitar, bass, percussion, harmonica, and a cello. But a pretty engaging brew it is. Reminds me of bits of TIM BARRY, Wisconsin-era CRUCIFUCKS (e.g. when they were getting a bit wistful and musical), the string-infused cabaret of RHYTHM ACTIVISM and an acoustic MOUNTAIN GOATS. All good things, which makes the lack of info/lyrics et al. all the more frustrating. I guess you'll just have to go the extra mile and a bit to track it down. (Ramsey Kanaan)

Brief recounting of a flood timeline:

There had already been a massive evacuation about two weeks prior to the June 20th news. We'd thought we were in the clear and the city had began to dismantle the massive dikes. Then, on Monday June 20th, the news was that we would have until the following Wednesday night at 10pm to get our things and get out; eventually, that deadline would become 6pm - and then 9am. The waters were coming.

For the next 3-5 days we assembled the same ragtag group of musicians and artists we'd put together for the first flood-scare. We worked 15 hours a day, sandbagging and evacuating. Once, on the local news' Facebook page, we saw that an elderly woman in our neighborhood needed help evacuating her home. We were close and responded 9 minutes after the posting went up. We stayed for the next half-hour before we headed across the street to help move washers and refrigerators; in that half-hour 25 people from all over Minot responded, walking through the door saying, "Am I in the right place?" There were too many hands for that house!

We helped as much as we could in Minot before the sirens were sounded and the National Guard, in Humvees, were posted on every street corner surrounding the evacuation zones. There were, at times, just six of us bagging sand - other times there were up to 16 of us trying to save a home. We descended like a swarm of friendly locusts. The news anchors said, "this is an event no man can stop..." while we tried to save as much as we could; we assumed that we wouldn't be able to defeat the flood in its entirety but that didn't mean we had to let it beat us entirely...we could win what we could win. When helping Minot became illegal and unsafe for us we headed towards some of the other towns downriver. We evacuated homes in Velva and sandbagged for hours in Burlington.

And now? We've been waiting with bated breath. The levees they've erected have held but many homes were sacrificed in the process. We're waiting for the waters to recede. When we're allowed back in the work will begin again - and in earnest - we'll need to gut and renovate homes all over the valley. There have been 12,000 displaced citizens from about 4,100 homes. The city's people have displayed so much heart but the worst might be yet to come...

Our plans at Pangea House:

We're having all of our friends across the country (Portland, Missoula, Fargo, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago...) throw benefit shows! They had been calling and writing asking, "What can we do to help?" And we thought of this...Even if it's just an acoustic show in the park where a hat is passed...any and all fundraisers/benefits that can come our way are much much much appreciated...our big plan is to have a sort of "add-on" website...like take the server and add a page to it? or something...techies to do that, ya know...something like, "flood.pangeahouse.org" where it lists the show, who played, what the date of the rock was, and all other pertinent vitals...then, there would be some pictures "Nato rocks the crowd @ the Triple Rock!" and finally, below the pictures and videos, a final tally of the funds sent our way "$54.27" or whatever...and there would be another part - a second web page, I guess - and at the top of the page there would be a running total from all of the shows listed prior..."$857.98" and you'd scroll down the page, "$57: sump pump" and you'd see pictures of the pump in action, helping Old Mable from down the street, etc....and all of it would be completely transparent...the money would just be stopping over, we would just hold onto it for a second before it makes its way - a la' School House Rocks' "Bill" - towards its end place, helping someone, somewhere...if we end up with excess we'll probably just donate it to the soup kitchen or something...ultimately, we'll just use the money to help as directly as possible because this TREMENDOUS disaster is going to need to be cleaned up after for months and months and months..

We're going to be setting up a Paypal account on that page as well. I'm not sure what the website will actually be but it will be up soon and I'll send it your way!

This post should have happened a log time ago.....Bird's Mile Home are one of the best bands in Missoula, thus why I released their record. Here is a vid of them at the Palace in Missoula.... good live footage highlights an original "A Walk Goodbye" and a cover of The Dwarves "One Time Only".

Joey, Allan and Booster took a weekend and went to the coast a couple weeks ago and this came out of it.......

Goddammitboyhowdy are three kids from Browning, Montana, the cultural and economic center of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The reservation is a huge chunk of flat, mostly barren land that begins on the eastern edge of Glacier National Park, and the story of the Blackfeet tribe and the glaring historical Fuck You’s that landed them there is one filled with broken treaties, restrictions on native religions, local massacres, and small pox epidemics—basically the same sickening circumstances that most native tribes were forced into by the expansionist U.S. Government of the 19^th and 20^th Century.........

MBR-004 will spread across the land starting May 6th in Portland Oregon at the location below. This slab of wax is coming out on 180gram vinyl and are hand numbered.

Looks like there is going to be a show in Olympia to follow on the 7th. Have yet to hear the whereabouts but will keep you posted-

Minneapolis' Ambassador Gun and Minor Bird Records realeases "Rich" ep. 500 copies of this are out there for sale. The covers are 5/1 CMYK are hand numbered and look RAD!

Here is the image of the release show Friday April 22nd-you all should go if you live in Minneapolis. They will be heading to Wisconsin too. Will keep you posted on East Coast tour in June and possible West Coast trip this summer.

Marty asked me to write here occasionally since he's so goddamn busy doing other things here and there. So I will on occasion occasionally write here from time to time! Ha! So:

As you may know readin' this here ol' blog, Minor Bird release 002 has been seemingly and resoundingly successful since its dee-butt this past month. Despite the release show at the Bike Doctor being shut down and subsequently Goddammitboyhowdy being not able to play, things turned out alright. Good vibeadaccio and good times were had and the 7 inch is garnering some delicious reviews. I personally dig the hell out of this record. "Goddammitboyhowdy is Rez Punk" is a damn fine record! But just as Geordie LaForge would say: "Don't take my word for it:"

Hey All,

I still cannot believe that I have a blog. I am still fighting the facebook and myspace things y'all use.

Anyway, we received MBR-003 in the mail last week and they are all put together and going to be release by the band at a show in Minneapolis on April 22nd. MBR-003 once again is Ambassador Gun, from the aforementioned Minneapolis, and is titled "Rich". The band put this artwork together and it looks KILLER!

MBR-004 Squalora's "Hell is Other People" is at the plant and will be released May 6th.

MBR-005 is in the process of getting ordered and I will update on this in the future. For fans of the Spits, Red Crayola, 13th Floor Elevators........maybe I am giving too much away.

I am excited......hope you all are too.

The record is back and we are putting it all together. 250 pieces of beautiful wax: hand-screened, hand-numbered, comes with cd version and insert. It looks SUPER!

Release show is going to go on on Saturday March 5th at the Bike Doctor in Missoula.

Noise Noise Noise will be making the trek from Billings to play.

The Hot New Mexicans from Athens, GA and currently on Recess records will be in town for the nights festivities.

Locals Tidal Horn will be kicking all the fun off at 9.

I am probably as surprised as you are that you are reading this right now. This will be the third step that I have taken in joining the internet generation. I'm on my way, slowly but it's coming along.

My good friend Al Gaither is hard at work right now on the website and it should be up by this weeks end or next. Thanks Al! Anyone who knows Al you should give him a great big hug when you see him.

I am currently working on 4 records and will keep you posted.
